Actors Guild of Nigeria seeks law to protect Nollywood actors

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) announced a campaign for legislation that would make the guild a statutory professional body. National President Abubakar Yakubu urged parliament to pass an act that would establish standard contracts, intellectual‑property protection, royalties, residual payments and mandatory licensing for practitioners, aiming to curb exploitation and raise professional standards across Nollywood.

The appeal was made during the Abuja Stars and Veterans Interactive Session at the AGN headquarters in Abuja. Yakubu also called on members to support the guild’s revalidation exercise, health‑insurance scheme and broader welfare initiatives, arguing that legal backing is essential for the future of Nigerian actors.
