Nigeria Actors Guild legislative push
Overview
In July 2026 the House of Representatives Committee on Arts, Culture and Creative Economy pledged legislative backing for the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), promising standard contracts, welfare measures and capacity‑building programmes. At the same time AGN President Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu announced Africa’s first Children’s Film Festival, seeking sponsorship from governments, corporations and NGOs to give children a platform for filmmaking and cultural education.
By early August, AGN intensified its campaign, urging parliament to pass a law that would make the guild a statutory professional body. The proposed act would codify standard contracts, protect intellectual property, ensure royalties and residual payments, and require mandatory licensing for Nollywood practitioners. AGN also called on members to support its revalidation, health‑insurance scheme and broader welfare initiatives, arguing that formal legal status is essential for the sector’s future.
