Bangladeshi actress Azmeri Haque Badhan was physically assaulted and harassed in Mestre, near Venice, while attending the Venice International Film Festival for the premiere of ‘The Difficult Bride’.

Badhan reported that a group of expatriate Bangladeshis surrounded her and her family in a park on Monday night. She alleged that the assailants pelted her with water, soft drinks, and eggs, struck her near her ear, and knocked her mobile phone from her hand. The attackers reportedly identified themselves as members of the banned Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League, and attempted to force her to chant political slogans.

Badhan stated the attack was motivated by her active participation in the July-August 2024 student-led mass movement in Bangladesh. She has filed an official complaint with local Italian police, and the Digos is currently investigating the incident to identify those captured in video footage of the encounter.
