Assault on Bangladeshi actress in Italy

Overview

Bangladeshi actress Azmeri Haq Badhon reported being harassed and physically assaulted by a group of expatriates in Mestre, near Venice, Italy, while attending the 83rd Venice International Film Festival for the premiere of ‘The Difficult Bride’. The incident occurred on a Monday night while she was visiting a park with her brother and his family.

Badhon alleged that the attackers, who identified themselves as members of the banned Awami League and Chhatra League, targeted her for her support of the July-August 2024 student-led mass movement in Bangladesh. She reported that the group pelted her with eggs, water, and soft drinks, knocked her mobile phone from her hand, and struck her near her ear. The attackers reportedly called her a ‘July militant’ and attempted to force her to chant political slogans.

Badhon has filed an official complaint with local Italian police. The Digos (Italian postal and communications police) is currently investigating the incident using video footage and witness testimonies to identify the perpetrators.

In response, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir addressed the Jatiya Sangsad, describing the assault as an “attack on the country’s democratic governance” and attributing it to activists from the banned Awami League. The Minister confirmed that the Bangladesh Embassy in Rome and the Consulate General in Milan are providing consular assistance and that the Embassy intends to raise the matter with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government has pledged full cooperation to ensure legal action is taken against the perpetrators.
