Actress Gowthami announced her departure from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on 15 June 2026, submitting a resignation letter to senior party official Palani Samy. In the letter she cited the prevailing political climate and a lack of support from the party leadership, expressing a desire to continue her social‑service work outside the party.

Gowthami’s political trajectory includes joining the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1997, leaving it in 2023, and rejoining the DMK in April 2024, where she held the post of deputy secretary for policy affairs. She has been active in campaigning for DMK candidates across Tamil Nadu and has now indicated she will support opposition candidates in the upcoming state elections.
