Tamil Nadu tension: bail, defection, anti‑corruption
Entities: AIADMK · Tamil Nadu · Edappadi K. Palaniswami · Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly · J. C. D. Prabhakar
Overview
Since taking oath on 16 July, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has intensified an anti‑corruption drive, warned that any minister caught taking bribes will be dismissed and ordered that no one be shielded in custodial‑death cases. He opened a cabinet meeting, launched a new ration scheme and, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of state projects worth over ₹5,650 crore, ordered a temporary drone ban for the Zanzibar president’s visit and issued a heat‑wave alert. Police seized senior editor Vijayan’s phone in a probe into an alleged Rs 35 crore bribe, prompting journalist unions and the DMK to condemn the action as an attack on press freedom. Vijay is now preparing a national coalition that would exclude both Congress and BJP, holding talks with regional leaders such as Jagan Mohan Reddy and Mamata Banerjee. The move coincides with a split in the opposition, as twenty MPs left the Nationalist CPI to join Banerjee’s breakaway faction. On 20 July, DMK MLA G. V. Markandayan was arrested after threatening Vijay in the Assembly. The arrest sparked accusations from DMK leaders MK Stalin and Kanimozhi that the police were targeting opposition figures, while officials also threatened journalists covering the incident. A bail application was admitted and a hearing was set for 22 July. The Judicial Magistrate dismissed both Markandayan’s bail petition and the police’s request for further custody, keeping him in judicial remand until 3 August. The Madras High Court agreed to hear an urgent challenge, with the MLA arguing that his detention violated statutory safeguards. On 22 July, the Chennai Principal Sessions Court granted conditional anticipatory bail to former DMK minister V. Senthilbalaji, ordering him to report twice daily to the Triplicane police station.
