Aïda Mbacké released from prison in Maristes murder case
Aïda Mbacké, convicted in the high-profile Maristes affair, has been released from prison. The case dates back to November 2018, when Mbacké set fire to her marital bedroom following a dispute, resulting in the death of her husband, Khadim Diop.
Originally sentenced to 20 years of criminal imprisonment by the Dakar Criminal Chamber in November 2021, her sentence was later reduced to 10 years by the Dakar Criminal Appeal Chamber in March 2023. The court reclassified the initial charge of assassination to murder.
Mbacké’s early release from the Rufisque women's penal camp is attributed to her exemplary conduct during incarceration, which allowed her to benefit from legal sentence reductions. Her release concludes the judicial proceedings of a case that drew significant public attention in Senegal.
