Aïda Mbacké Maristes murder case release

Overview

Aïda Mbacké, convicted in the high-profile Maristes affair in Senegal, has been released from the Rufisque Women’s Correctional Center. The case originated in November 2018, when a domestic dispute involving a suspected second wife led Mbacké to set fire to her marital bedroom using flammable liquid, resulting in the death of her husband, Khadim Ndiaye (also identified as Khadim Diop).

Mbacké was originally sentenced to 20 years of criminal imprisonment in November 2021. However, the Dakar Criminal Appeal Chamber reclassified the charge from assassination to murder and reduced her sentence to 10 years in March 2023. Her release was facilitated by exemplary conduct during her incarceration, which allowed for legal sentence reductions.

Following her release, Mbacké has been placed under electronic monitoring. In response to the development, Abdoulaye Ndiaye, the brother of the deceased, issued a statement to defend his brother’s memory, describing him as a man of “immense kindness, discretion, and exemplary piety” and requesting that the public respect the dignity of the grieving family.
