Germany travel sector reports mixed results amid autumn holiday traffic warnings

The German travel industry reports a mixed outlook. The German Travel Association (DRV) noted a 4% increase in revenue during the summer season, driven by Mediterranean destinations like Greece and Turkey. However, long-distance travel saw a 14% decline, and a slight revenue decrease is projected for the winter 2026/27 season due to rising costs and consumer caution.

Simultaneously, the start of autumn holidays in Germany is triggering significant travel disruptions. The ADAC warns of heavy traffic congestion on major autobahns, with congestion levels potentially matching those seen during the summer. Key affected routes include the A1, A3, A7, and A8, with significant delays expected for travelers heading toward the Alps, coasts, and lakes. Specific regional congestion is noted in North Rhine-Westphalia, particularly around Cologne, Bonn, and the Ruhr area.

In addition to road traffic, travelers face disruptions in rail services, including construction-related delays on lines toward the Baltic Sea. At Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), approximately 1.4 million passengers are expected over the holiday period. International travelers may also encounter delays on major transit routes through Austria and Switzerland, such as the Brenner motorway.
