Germany autumn holiday traffic and travel congestion
Overview
As autumn school holidays continue across Germany, authorities and motoring organizations, including the ADAC and ACE, have issued warnings for the weekend of October 23 to 25, 2026. The projected congestion is driven by a transition in holiday schedules: while autumn breaks are beginning in Baden-Württemberg, they are concluding in six other federal states, and five others remain in their second week.
Heavy traffic is anticipated on routes heading south toward the Alps, as well as toward coastal areas and various lakes. Friday afternoon is expected to be the busiest period due to the overlap of commuter traffic and holiday travelers. Saturday is projected to see high volumes of return travelers from the Alps, Mediterranean, and coastal regions, while Sunday is expected to see an increase in return trips starting from midday.
In addition to holiday travel, approximately 1,100 active construction sites on the Autobahn network are expected to cause further delays. High-risk routes include the A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A44, A45, A61, A72, A81, A96, and A99. Significant delays have already been reported on the A7 motorway near the Elbe Tunnel and in the area between Rendsburg and Tarp in Schleswig-Holstein due to ongoing construction.
As Bavaria begins its autumn school holidays, the ADAC warns of potential jams heading south toward the Alps, Austria, and Northern Italy, particularly on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. High-risk sections include the A7, A8, A93, A95/B2, and A99. International travelers may face additional delays from construction on the Brenner route in Italy, single-lane restrictions at the Lueg Bridge in Austria, and time lost at border controls.
