Germany highway traffic warnings issued for autumn holiday weekend
German motoring organizations ADAC and ACE are warning of increased traffic congestion and high risks of delays on German highways during the weekend of October 23 to 25, 2026. The surge in travel is attributed to the intersection of autumn holidays, with holidays beginning in Baden-Württemberg while ending in six other federal states.
Heavy traffic is expected on routes heading south toward the Alps, as well as toward coastal areas and lakes. Significant delays are also anticipated due to approximately 1,100 active construction sites across the highway network. Friday afternoon is projected to be the busiest period due to commuter and holiday travel, while Saturday and Sunday will see high volumes of return trips.
Specific areas already experiencing issues include the A7 motorway near the Elbe Tunnel and between Rendsburg and Tarp, where construction has caused significant delays. Other major affected routes include the A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, and A96.
