Adam Boulton apologises for calling late Ann Widdecombe a “spinster”

Former Sky News presenter Adam Boulton described the late former MP Ann Widdecombe as a “spinster” and an “old maid” on live television after her body was found at her Dartmoor home, sparking widespread criticism for the remarks.

Boulton later issued a public apology, calling his choice of words “clumsy” and “seriously wrong and insensitive”, and said he had not intended to offend. He reiterated respect for Widdecombe’s political career and her later television work.

Police confirmed a murder investigation into Widdecombe’s death, initially arresting a 26‑year‑old British man, who was subsequently released and is no longer part of the inquiry. The case remains under active investigation.
