Widdecombe murder: suspect charged, Farage links home attack
Overview
Former minister Ann Widdecombe’s body was discovered at her Dartmoor cottage on 9 July 2026, after being struck with a hammer. Surveillance footage identified 28-year-old Joshua Kerry, who was arrested in Rotherham on 11 July. He was re-arrested on suspicion of commissioning terrorist acts and formally charged with murder on 20 July. Kerry appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court; a trial is provisionally set for June 2027, with case-management hearings scheduled for 9 October and 20 November 2026.
Counter-terrorism Policing took over the investigation in mid-July, describing the killing as a “targeted attack”. In early August, the unit reopened a previously closed attempted burglary inquiry from April 2025 in Greater London, citing a line of inquiry that was not identified or pursued during the original investigation by the Metropolitan Police and Counter Terrorism Policing London. Consequently, Counter Terrorism Policing London made a mandatory conduct referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating allegations that a staff member failed to properly pursue the relevant lead.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has claimed that the April 2025 incident—involving a “lit incendiary device” pushed through his letterbox—is “directly linked” to the Widdecombe murder. Farage criticized previous police handling, stating that Reform UK figures had been “treated very differently to everybody else” until the tragedy prompted renewed security focus.
A private requiem mass was held on 12 August at Buckfast Abbey in Devon to honor the 78-year-old. Approximately 100 mourners, including politicians and broadcasters, attended the service. Following her death, a portrait of Widdecombe was installed in Portcullis House as an initial tribute.
