Ann Widdecombe murder probe under counter‑terrorism

Overview

Former minister Ann Widdecombe, 78, was attacked on 8 July, hours before a scheduled television interview, and was found dead with serious injuries at her Haytor bungalow on 9 July 2026. A 28‑year‑old white British man was arrested in Rotherham on suspicion of murder and, after new intelligence, was rearrested on suspicion of commissioning, preparing or instigating terrorist acts.

Counter‑Terrorism Policing South East, led by Laurence Taylor, took over the investigation on 12 July after “new information and evidence” emerged, superseding the earlier murder‑only inquiry by Devon and Cornwall Police. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the suspect is not on the Prevent list and that no political or extremist motive has yet been identified. Police have logged over 120 tips, appealed for further information, and maintained a heightened presence at the property while pursuing forensic evidence and possible accomplices.

The probe has prompted a review of security arrangements for current and former public officials and revived debate over protection for public figures. A wreath‑laying ceremony attended by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage sparked criticism; Farage called the killing a “premeditated murder” and was accused of politicising the tragedy.

The investigation remains active, with authorities monitoring for any further leads.
