Adam Glapiński faces potential State Tribunal trial
The Constitutional Responsibility Commission is scheduled to vote on a motion to bring Adam Glapiński, the Governor of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), before the State Tribunal. The proceedings follow the hearing of over 50 witnesses regarding allegations that Glapiński violated the constitution and various laws.
The primary allegations include the indirect financing of the budget deficit through asset purchases between 2020 and 2021, as well as conducting currency interventions without proper authorization from the Monetary Policy Council or the NBP management board. While the ruling coalition is expected to support the motion in both the commission and the Sejm, a parliamentary vote alone does not remove the Governor; only a verdict from the State Tribunal can officially rule on his dismissal.
The National Bank of Poland has maintained that all allegations are entirely groundless. The political process follows long-standing tensions between the current government and Glapiński, who has been a prominent opponent of Poland joining the eurozone.
