Adam Glapiński faces potential State Tribunal trial
The Sejm Constitutional Responsibility Commission has adopted a report recommending that Adam Glapiński, the President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), be brought before the State Tribunal. The commission maintained eight specific charges against Glapiński, including allegations of indirectly financing the budget deficit through asset purchases between 2020 and 2021, acting without proper authorization from the Monetary Policy Council, unauthorized currency interventions, and violating principles of political neutrality.
In response, the NBP has challenged the legitimacy of the proceedings. The central bank issued a statement claiming the commission's report is based on a “unilateral, selective and biased interpretation of the gathered materials.” The NBP further argued that the commission lacks independence and expertise, noting it is a political body dominated by the governing coalition.
The bank also asserted that a simple majority in the Sejm is insufficient to hold the NBP President constitutionally accountable. The NBP maintains that such actions would violate the principle of central bank independence established in the Polish Constitution and European Union law, and noted that current laws regarding the State Tribunal do not provide for the suspension of the NBP President during proceedings.
