Adam Glapiński faces recommendation for State Tribunal prosecution
The Sejm Constitutional Responsibility Commission has adopted a final report recommending that Adam Glapiński, the President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), be held constitutionally accountable before the State Tribunal. This marks the first time in the history of the Third Polish Republic that a parliamentary commission has recommended such action against a sitting central bank governor.
The commission's investigation, which began in May 2024, included 32 sessions and testimony from over 50 witnesses. The report outlines eight specific charges against Glapiński. Key allegations include the indirect financing of the national budget deficit by at least 144 billion PLN through bond purchases between 2020 and 2021 without proper authorization from the Monetary Policy Council. Other charges involve currency interventions conducted without management board approval, interest rate decisions during election periods, and violations of the principle of political neutrality.
The decision was passed by the ruling coalition. Members of the Law and Justice (PiS) party have strongly criticized the move, with MP Iwona Arent claiming the proceedings are intended to paralyze the NBP and destabilize Poland's financial situation. PiS has filed a minority motion to oppose the report.
