Adamuz train accident investigation focuses on 6.4mm track defect
Judicial experts and the Guardia Civil are investigating a 6.4 millimeter leveling defect in the high-speed tracks near Adamuz, which may have contributed to a major railway accident.
The collision occurred on January 18 when an Iryo train derailed and entered the path of a Renfe Alvia train. The accident resulted in 46 deaths and over 120 injuries. Investigators identified the track anomaly at kilometer point 318+682, noting it was detected in October 2025, three months prior to the crash.
While Adif maintains that the 6.4 millimeter deviation was within European tolerance limits and did not trigger safety alerts, judicial experts are examining whether the defect led to the rail fracture. The investigation continues as political tension remains regarding accountability for the tragedy.
