Adamuz train accident investigation

Overview

Investigations into the Adamuz train accident, which resulted in 46 deaths and over 120 injuries, continue to focus on the technical causes of the January 18 derailment. The accident involved an Iryo train derailing into the path of a Renfe Alvia train.

A Guardia Civil report has identified a complete transverse fracture in the rail at kilometer point 318+681 as a primary anomaly. This fracture occurred at a weld connecting rail sections from 1989 and 2023. Judicial experts are examining a 6.4-millimeter leveling defect detected at kilometer point 318+682 in October 2025, three months before the crash. Experts suggest this defect may have caused a ‘seesaw’ effect, potentially amplifying material fatigue as train wheels passed over the dip.

State-owned rail manager Adif has defended its maintenance protocols, maintaining that the 6.4 mm anomaly was well within European safety and comfort thresholds. Adif officials noted the defect did not require immediate intervention because it remained significantly below the 16 mm threshold for mandatory action, and subsequent dynamic inspections reportedly showed levels within permitted limits. Political tension remains high as investigators seek to determine accountability for the tragedy.
