Adamuz train accident investigation focuses on rail fracture and track defects

Investigations into the Adamuz train accident, which killed 46 people and injured over 100, have revealed conflicting findings regarding the cause of the derailment. A Guardia Civil report identifies a complete transverse fracture in the rail at kilometer point 318+681 as the primary anomaly. This break occurred at a weld joining two different rail sections: one manufactured in 1989 and another in 2023.

Judicial experts have proposed that a 6.4 mm leveling defect detected in October 2025 may have contributed to the failure. They suggest that as train wheels passed over this 'dip', it created a 'seesaw effect' that amplified fatigue damage at the weld, which is the weakest part of the structure.

In response, the state-owned rail manager Adif maintains that the detected 6.4 mm anomaly was well within European safety and comfort thresholds. Adif officials stated that the defect did not require immediate maintenance intervention, as it remained significantly below the 16 mm threshold for mandatory action and subsequent dynamic inspections also showed levels within permitted limits.
