Adamuz train accident investigation to exceed one-year deadline
The technical investigation into the Adamuz train accident, which occurred on January 18, 2026, and resulted in 46 fatalities, will exceed the initial twelve-month legal timeframe. The Independent Administrative Authority for the Technical Investigation of Railway, Maritime, and Civil Aviation Accidents and Incidents (Aitat) notified the Adamuz Derailment Victims Association that the delay is due to the 'exceptionally complex character' of the case.
Aitat president Gonzalo Julián Guillén stated that the inquiry is currently in a technical analysis phase. The agency noted that coordination with judicial proceedings has required specific steps to formalize laboratory analysis assignments, though these actions have not halted other parts of the investigation. Aitat intends to publish a provisional report detailing technical progress and identified safety issues.
Mario Samper, president of the victims' association, criticized the delay as 'inconceivable and inadmissible,' citing a shortage of personnel assigned to the case as a contributing factor.
