Adamuz railway accident investigation

Overview

The investigation into the Adamuz railway accident, which caused 46 deaths, has faced significant delays and allegations of procedural misconduct.

In October 2026, Isabel López López, a member of the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF), testified before the Spanish Congress, alleging a lack of transparency. She claimed that technical reports are frequently modified when they reach “higher instances” and called for investigators to have their technical criteria respected to maintain independence.

Simultaneously, the Independent Administrative Authority for the Technical Investigation of Railway, Maritime, and Civil Aviation Accidents and Incidents (Aitat) announced that the inquiry will exceed its initial twelve-month legal deadline. Aitat president Gonzalo Julián Guillén attributed the delay to the “exceptionally complex character” of the case and the need to coordinate with judicial proceedings.

Victims' associations have criticized these developments. Mario Samper, president of the Adamuz Derailment Victims Association, described the investigation delays as “inconceivable and inadmissible,” pointing to a shortage of personnel as a contributing factor.
