Addiction recovery and health protocols proposed in Mexico and Argentina
In Mexico City, Deputy Alberto Vanegas Arenas has proposed reforms to the local Health Law to establish an Inter-institutional Protocol for Action in Psychotropic Crises. The initiative seeks to create coordination mechanisms for the assessment, protection, and referral of individuals experiencing risks related to psychoactive substance consumption. The proposal emphasizes treating addiction as a public health issue without stigmatization or criminalization, explicitly stating it does not advocate for forced confinement or the deprivation of liberty. Additionally, the reform includes a plan for individualized follow-up for those who complete addiction treatment.
In Argentina, the Municipality of Concepción del Uruguay has partnered with Narcotics Anonymous to launch a community activity cycle titled ‘Recovery is Possible.’ The program aims to provide information, foster dialogue, and increase visibility regarding addiction recovery. The initiative, which includes various local health centers, focuses on mental health and suicide prevention through support groups and community engagement.
