ADEME report: Electric vehicles significantly lower emissions and costs in France

The French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME) has released findings indicating that electric vehicles (EVs) produce significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions over their entire lifecycle compared to internal combustion engine or hybrid models. Depending on the specific analysis, EVs emit between two to four times less CO2 when accounting for manufacturing, daily use, and recycling.

While the production of lithium-ion batteries results in a higher initial carbon footprint—roughly double that of thermal vehicles—this impact is offset during use. In France, due to a low-carbon electricity mix dominated by nuclear and renewable energy, the environmental advantage is realized after approximately 30,000 to 70,000 kilometers of driving.

Economically, the agency reports that operating an electric vehicle is significantly more cost-effective. Drivers can see monthly energy costs reduced by up to three times compared to diesel or gasoline vehicles. Additionally, EVs offer protection against the price volatility of fossil fuels and require less maintenance over time.
