EV market trends: High depreciation and shifting usage

Overview

The global automotive market continues to see a shift as electric vehicle (EV) list prices fall below those of hybrid models, driven by declining lithium-ion battery costs and China’s market dominance.

Resale value remains a critical challenge. In France, data from Leboncoin Auto indicates that the ten best-selling electric models experience an average depreciation of 59% after five years, significantly higher than the 35% to 52% seen in internal combustion engine vehicles. Specific model declines include the Renault Zoé at 65%, the Peugeot e-208 at roughly 60%, the Tesla Model 3 at 56%, and the Dacia Spring at approximately 53%.

To mitigate these costs and support the used market, a new financial aid program has entered into effect in France. Funded by energy suppliers through energy savings certificates (CEE), this subsidy applies to the purchase or long-term lease of used 100% electric vehicles from professionals. The aid is available regardless of income, provided the vehicle’s battery retains at least 80% capacity. Additionally, home care professionals may qualify for enhanced subsidies of up to approximately 2,000 euros for specific models.

While the Greek market is still developing, broader European trends suggest a similar downward pressure on used EV prices compared to traditional vehicles, though rising fuel costs continue to drive demand for used electric models in some regions.
