ADF attacks in Beni territory kill at least 14 civilians

In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, armed fighters identified as members of the ADF carried out a series of assaults on the commune of Mangina and the nearby village of Kalibo in the Beni territory of North‑Kivu. The first strike on the night of 15 – 16 July 2026 resulted in eight civilian deaths, with a second wave later that morning reportedly killing additional people. Subsequent reporting put the total death toll at least fourteen civilians, with several others wounded.

The Congolese army (FARDC) responded quickly, claiming to have limited further casualties and rescuing a minor child after an alert was raised by a local youngster. The attacks prompted a large displacement of residents, the closure of shops and markets, and the erection of barricades in Mangina as villagers expressed anger and fear. Community leaders called for stronger patrols and more consistent military presence to prevent future incursions.

The violence underscores the ongoing insecurity in the region, despite ongoing security operations against the ADF and other armed groups.
