ADHD and anxiety: Understanding the overlap and diagnostic challenges

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and anxiety are distinct conditions that frequently co-occur, complicating diagnosis and treatment. While ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by issues with attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, anxiety is a mental disorder manifested through fear and nervousness. Both conditions can share symptoms such as restlessness, sleep disturbances, and concentration difficulties.

Statistics indicate that approximately 4% of adults and 11% of children struggle with ADHD, while anxiety affects about 19% of adults and 7% of children. Notably, nearly half of adults with ADHD also experience anxiety, and the rate is nearly 40% among children.

In the Czech Republic, discussions regarding ADHD have highlighted the prevalence of undiagnosed adults living with the condition. Experts emphasize that many individuals carry symptoms like chronic procrastination and emotional instability into adulthood without a formal diagnosis. Recent initiatives have focused on improving access to professional care, utilizing modern diagnostic tools like virtual reality, and providing support for navigating workplace challenges.
