ADHD diagnosis trends and clinical standards under scrutiny
Medical professionals are highlighting a rise in adult ADHD diagnoses, noting that the condition was long misidentified as a childhood-only disorder. Psychiatrist Prof. Andreas Menke explains that increased awareness and better recognition are leading to more adults receiving necessary treatment and understanding how the condition affects their lives and relationships.
In a separate development regarding diagnostic standards, the University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) Basel faced scrutiny for delegating ADHD assessments largely to students and interns. Reports indicated that interns conducted examinations while senior psychologists signed off on diagnoses without personal involvement in the clinical process. While the clinic stated no misdiagnoses have been confirmed, the insurer Prioswiss has deemed such practices ineligible for reimbursement through mandatory basic insurance. The UPK has since intensified supervision and is reviewing its procedures.
