Rising ADHD diagnoses and scrutiny of clinical standards
Overview
By mid-August 2026, global trends indicated a significant rise in ADHD diagnoses and prescriptions across various age groups. A review in the Journal of Psychopharmacology highlights increased recognition, particularly in adults and women who were historically underdiagnosed. In the United Kingdom, adult prescriptions have recently surpassed those for children. In Germany, data from DAK-Gesundheit revealed that in 2024, first-time pediatric diagnoses increased by 16% year-over-year, affecting roughly 202,000 young people. While boys are diagnosed twice as often as girls, the rate of increase was higher among girls (21%) than boys (14%).
Medical professionals continue to emphasize that the rise in adult diagnoses stems from a shift in understanding, as the condition was previously misidentified as a childhood-only disorder. Psychiatrist Prof. Andreas Menke noted that increased awareness allows more adults to receive treatment and understand how the condition impacts their lives and relationships.
However, clinical standards have come under scrutiny in Switzerland. The University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) Basel faced criticism for delegating ADHD assessments largely to students and interns, with senior psychologists reportedly signing off on diagnoses without personal involvement. While the clinic stated that no misdiagnoses have been confirmed, the insurer Prioswiss has deemed these practices ineligible for reimbursement through mandatory basic insurance. In response, the UPK has intensified supervision and is reviewing its clinical procedures.
