ADHD traits linked to problematic internet use in German meta‑analysis

A 2023 meta‑analysis by Christoph Augner and colleagues from the Paracelsus Medical Private University Salzburg and the Sigmund Freud University Linz examined how the three core features of attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—inattention, excessive motor drive or inner restlessness, and impulsivity—relate to problematic internet use. The review found that higher levels of each ADHD trait are associated with reduced control over online behavior and greater neglect of other life areas. Separately, German experts Dr. Kirsten Stollhoff and Prof. Thomas Ethofer explained the three clinically recognised ADHD subtypes. About 3‑5 % of the German population is affected. Type 1 (combined) shows both inattention and hyperactivity‑impulsivity and is linked to the highest symptom burden. Type 2 (predominantly inattentive) lacks hyperactivity and is more common among girls, who often experience psychosomatic complaints and chronic overload. The discussion highlighted genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and the need for tailored therapeutic approaches.
