Adif launches 175 million euro GSM-R modernization for Spanish high-speed rail

Adif, Spain's railway infrastructure manager, has launched a tender for the modernization and maintenance of GSM-R digital communication systems across the high-speed rail (KDP) network. The investment is estimated to cost approximately 175.5 million euros.

The project includes the maintenance, operation, and technological renewal of the central GSM-R platform, fixed telecommunications, fiber and data networks, video monitoring, and access control systems. It also covers tunnel communication infrastructure and remote energy control systems.

The works will span several major high-speed corridors, including Madrid–Valladolid, Madrid–Barcelona (to the French border), Madrid–Valencia, Madrid–Sevilla, Córdoba–Málaga, and Zaragoza–Huesca, among others.

While this tender focuses on updating and maintaining the current GSM-R infrastructure, Adif noted that it is distinct from the future transition to FRMCS technology, for which the company is conducting separate pilot and validation studies.
