Adif railway expansion and modernization in Spain

Overview

In July 2026, Spain’s railway infrastructure manager Adif announced a major recruitment drive, opening 1,531 public‑sector positions across operational, managerial, technical and high‑speed specialisations. Transport Minister Óscar Puente highlighted the hiring as the largest at Adif in five years, aimed at strengthening the rail network.

Adif has since progressed with several infrastructure projects. To integrate Griñón station into the Cercanías commuter‑rail network, the company is working to link Humanes, Griñón, and Illescas in the province of Toledo. This includes building a new track at Illescas and a €2.6 million design tender for a 9.4-km fully electrified track with modern signalling. The station upgrades will feature a refurbished passenger building, platforms with canopies, an underpass with an elevator, and improved access.

To modernize the high-speed rail (KDP) network, Adif launched a €175.5 million tender for the maintenance and technological renewal of digital GSM-R communication systems. This covers central platforms, fiber and data networks, video monitoring, and tunnel communication across major corridors such as Madrid–Barcelona, Madrid–Valencia, and Madrid–Sevilla. Adif noted this is distinct from future FRMCS technology transitions.

Additionally, ADIF Alta Velocidad has initiated a €3.8 million project to resolve drainage issues on a six-kilometer stretch of the Madrid-Levante high-speed line in Toledo. The contract, awarded to Becsa S.A., involves replacing existing ditches with more resistant structures and improving service roads to address soil settlement and water evacuation difficulties.
