Adolescent binge drinking permanently alters adult brain sensitivity to alcohol
A study published in Molecular Psychiatry indicates that binge-like alcohol consumption during adolescence can permanently alter how the adult brain responds to alcohol. Research conducted at Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen–Nuremberg using male mice demonstrated that heavy drinking during the adolescent stage leaves hippocampal nerve cells unusually sensitive to alcohol even after long periods of abstinence in adulthood.
The biological mechanism involves GIRK channels (G-protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels) and the developmental signaling protein activin A. While GIRK channels typically dampen nerve cell activity, alcohol can stimulate them to produce certain effects on the brain. The study also noted that the medication baclofen was able to reduce this altered alcohol sensitivity in brain tissue preparations.
Researchers noted that adolescence is a critical period of brain development where reward-seeking systems are highly active while regions responsible for self-control are still maturing. This imbalance may contribute to increased risk-taking behaviors, such as heavy alcohol consumption, which can lead to lasting changes in memory, anxiety, and impulsivity.
