This study specifically highlighted that intermittent ethanol exposure disrupts communication between astrocytes and synapses within the hippocampus. These changes persist after extended abstinence and are linked to altered fear-related behaviors in adulthood.
Complementing these neurological findings, a study commissioned by Germany’s Federal Institute for Public Health (BIÖG) examined consumption trends. Data from 2025 indicates that approximately 45.8 percent of men aged 18 to 25 engaged in binge drinking, though this represents a slight decrease from 2023. In contrast, binge drinking among young women declined from 32.0 percent to 26.1 percent during the same period. Federal addiction expert Hendrik Streeck warned that consumption during these critical developmental stages poses significant risks to both physical and mental health.
