Adolescent fertility rates decline in San Luis Potosí and Cundinamarca

Regional health data from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and Cundinamarca, Colombia, show significant declines in adolescent fertility rates.

In San Luis Potosí, the State Population Council (Coespo) reported that forced fertility among girls aged 12 to 14 dropped from 2.45 births per thousand in 2018 to 2.12 in 2025. The rate for girls aged 10 to 14 also decreased from 1.49 to 1.28. Officials attributed these improvements to institutional actions focused on education, social policies to keep youth in school, and providing tools to identify risks associated with early pregnancy.

In Cundinamarca, Colombia, the fertility rate for females aged 10 to 19 reached a record low of 10.23 births per thousand in 2025. The regional government linked this decline to strengthened sexual and reproductive health services and educational initiatives. One such program, the ‘Pasaporte para la Ciudadanía Sexual’ (Passport for Sexual Citizenship), aims to promote autonomy and rights among youth across various municipalities.
