Adolescent fertility trends in Latin America

Overview

Regional data from Mexico and Colombia indicate a general downward trend in adolescent fertility rates, though challenges regarding very young pregnancies persist.

In San Luis Potosí, Mexico, the State Population Council reported that forced fertility among girls aged 12 to 14 fell from 2.45 births per thousand in 2018 to 2.12 in 2025. Similarly, Cundinamarca, Colombia, recorded a record low fertility rate of 10.23 births per thousand for females aged 10 to 19 in 2025. Officials in these regions attributed these declines to improved sexual and reproductive health services, educational initiatives, and social policies designed to keep youth in school.

In Coahuila, Mexico, while pregnancies in minors under 15 decreased by 62 percent between 2015 and 2025, cases among very young girls remain a concern. In 2024, 197 births were recorded in girls under 15, primarily among 14-year-olds. Local authorities noted that many of these cases involve adult progenitors and highlighted the resulting social and economic difficulties, such as educational abandonment and cycles of poverty.
