Adolescent pregnancy trends show decline but persist in Coahuila

Reports highlight the ongoing challenges of adolescent pregnancy, specifically focusing on cases involving children under 15. In Coahuila, Mexico, data from the Procuraduría para Niños, Niñas y la Familia (PRONNIF) and Matatena A. C. indicate that while there has been a general downward trend, pregnancies among very young girls persist. In 2024, 197 births were recorded in girls under 15, with the majority—162 cases—occurring in 14-year-olds.

Mayra Valdés, Secretary of Women in Coahuila, noted that between 2015 and 2025, pregnancies in minors under 15 decreased by 62 percent. However, health records also reveal the involvement of adults as progenitors in many cases.

Broader regional observations suggest that adolescent pregnancy leads to significant social, economic, and emotional difficulties. Young parents often abandon their education to seek income, frequently resulting in a cycle of poverty. In many instances, the responsibility for childcare and financial support falls on grandparents. Furthermore, a lack of support and fear of parental reaction can lead to dangerous situations, including the use of unsafe home remedies to terminate pregnancies.
