Moldova expands energy compensation eligibility for 2026-2027

The Moldovan government is planning to expand energy and heating compensation to approximately 670,000 families for the upcoming cold season, an increase of 50,000 households compared to the previous year. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that the decision follows rising natural gas tariffs, which increased to 26.14 lei per cubic meter on October 1.

To ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable, authorities are implementing stricter eligibility checks. According to Parliament Vice-President Doina Gherman, households may be excluded if they possess high-value real estate, significant interest from bank deposits, or have recently purchased new vehicles. While specific financial thresholds for property and interest have not yet been finalized, the government aims to target those with genuine financial need.

Registration for these compensations is scheduled to begin on November 2, with final eligibility criteria and payment values expected to be announced in the last week of October. The estimated budget for these compensations in 2026 is 550 million lei, funded by the state budget and external partners.
