Moldova gas and fuel tariff hikes
Entities: National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) · Energocom · Vasile Tofan · Moldovan Government · European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
Overview
Since May 2026 Moldova has tightened its gas‑security framework, expanded Romanian pipeline capacity, imposed ten‑day gas‑stock reserves and a 61‑day petroleum‑product reserve, and simplified cross‑border transport rules. Energocom secured roughly 40 % of winter capacity at the Ungheni interconnection auction and launched several EBRD‑backed procurement rounds for the 2026‑27 gas year, while the regulator modestly raised commercial margins for gasoline and diesel in late July. ANRE drafted a regulated household gas price of 20.30 lei /m³ (incl. VAT) and raised pump prices, later adjusting retail gasoline to 30.54 lei/L and diesel to 31.00 lei/L. Energocom continued to request a higher regulated household tariff (up to 19.37 lei /m³ without VAT) as procurement proceeds through October.
On 29 July Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced that a natural‑gas tariff increase is unavoidable, attributing it to higher distribution and supply costs. He said the government will mitigate the impact for vulnerable households through compensation and urged public debate to focus on relief measures rather than denial, noting recent opposition‑organised protests against rising gas prices.
