AEI agent killed in Tecate, Mexico

An agent of Mexico's Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), identified unofficially as the head of the vehicle‑theft unit, was shot dead outside his home in the El Escorial neighborhood of Tecate, Baja California, on the morning of 19 June 2026. The attack occurred around 08:00 hours; investigators found shell casings, a green cardboard sign with an unread message and an abandoned vehicle near the scene.

Security forces from municipal, state and federal agencies cordoned the area, conducted searches of nearby streets and secured the location. No arrests have been reported and authorities have not disclosed a motive. The investigation continues to determine responsibility for the killing.
