Spain records historic summer heat with record temperatures in Murcia and Aragon

Spain has experienced an exceptionally hot summer in 2026, with several regions recording historic temperature highs. In Murcia, the summer was the warmest since 1961, featuring an average temperature of 26.8°C and over twenty days of heatwaves. Aragon also saw record-breaking heat, with temperatures 3.4°C above the 1991-2020 average, surpassing the previous record from 2022. This period in Aragon was also marked by significant drought, with precipitation levels at only 46% of the normal value.

In Ourense, temperatures reached a maximum of 42.6°C, marking the hottest summer since 1869, and the extreme heat has been linked to twenty deaths in the province. Badajoz recorded the highest temperature in the country at 39.4°C.

As the country transitions into autumn, meteorological forecasts from AEMET suggest a continued trend of warmer-than-usual temperatures. September is projected to be the warmest September in Spain since at least 1950, with an estimated average of 22.4°C. While some Atlantic fronts are expected to bring rain and a temperature drop to the northwest and Cantabrian regions later in the month, much of the country is expected to maintain summer-like conditions during the early autumn period.
