Spanish airports hit record passenger numbers in July

Spanish airports reached record passenger levels in July, with Aena's network reporting 34.4 million travelers, a 5% increase compared to the previous year. Major hubs like Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat continue to drive this growth, with El Prat seeing a 6% rise in July.

While national trends show expansion, regional performance varies. Galicia's airport network experienced a 7% decline in July, contrasting with the national upward trend. Conversely, the Alicante-Elche airport broke records with over 75,000 daily passengers, and Badajoz reported its best month in history.

In addition to passenger volume, Aena is seeing increased revenue from the 'new mobility' sector, as VTC platforms like Uber and Cabify pay millions for dedicated terminal spaces. Meanwhile, the industry is focusing on decarbonization through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to meet 2050 emission targets.

Security measures remain active, with Spanish authorities conducting border controls on travelers arriving from Italy at various airports, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Malaga, following the suspension of Schengen space access by Italy.
