Aeroparque Jorge Newbery reopens after 55-hour runway maintenance closure

Aeroparque Jorge Newbery in Buenos Aires resumed operations on Thursday at 16:00 following a 55-hour closure for preventive runway maintenance. The shutdown, which began on Tuesday, affected more than 900 flights and required a significant reorganization of the metropolitan air traffic system.

During the closure, approximately 80% of domestic operations were diverted to Ezeiza International Airport. This surge caused an increase in passenger volume at Ezeiza, with daily movements rising from roughly 530 to 940. The shift also impacted ground transportation, with a 40% increase in demand for services heading to Ezeiza.

The maintenance work, including milling and repaving, is part of a larger $85 million infrastructure investment plan by Aeropuertos Argentina to improve operational safety and prepare for the upcoming high season. Aerolíneas Argentinas reported that 92% of affected passengers were successfully relocated, while JetSmart provided alternatives through Ezeiza and regional airports in Rosario and Córdoba.

Reopening is expected to be progressive, with potential delays and rescheduling expected as flight schedules return to normal.
