AFA leaders Tapia and Toviggino face money laundering investigations
Argentine federal authorities are investigating new allegations of money laundering involving Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and treasurer Pablo Toviggino. The investigation, overseen by Judge Adrián González Charvay in Campana, has been consolidated with existing cases involving the suspicious purchase of a $17 million mansion in Pilar and other allegations of illicit enrichment.
The legal scrutiny stems from a complaint filed by businessman Guillermo Tofoni. Tofoni alleges that following the 2022 World Cup, the AFA bypassed existing commercial agreements for international friendly matches to divert funds into offshore accounts. This scheme reportedly involves the use of exchange houses and financial institutions in Buenos Aires to move millions of dollars.
Parallel to the Argentine proceedings, the FBI and the United States justice system are investigating claims of asset laundering and fraudulent administration. Tofoni provided documentation through the discovery process suggesting that significant sums intended for the AFA were redirected through irregular financial maneuvers.
