Investigation into Claudio Tapia for alleged illicit wealth
Overview
Argentine federal authorities have launched a judicial investigation into Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), regarding allegations of illicit enrichment.
The inquiry, led by prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita and overseen by Judge Ariel Lijo, focuses on Tapia’s tenure as a public official at the Coordinación Ecológica Área Metropolitana Sociedad del Estado (CEAMSE). The investigation was prompted by a complaint from businessman Guillermo Tofoni, who alleges that Tapia’s wealth increased by approximately 1,000% between 2017 and 2024.
Specific details under scrutiny include a significant increase in liquidity and real estate holdings. Reports indicate that Tapia’s declared assets reportedly shifted from approximately $1.5 million in cash to over $39 million in cash, $1.002 billion in bank deposits, and over $246,000 in savings accounts. Investigators are also examining the 2019 acquisition of four high-value properties in the City and Province of Buenos Aires.
To reconstruct Tapia’s financial evolution, the prosecutor has requested measures to lift banking, tax, and financial secrecy. Authorities are seeking information from the Central Bank, the National Securities Commission (CNV), and the tax agency (ARCA). While Tapia is the head of the AFA, officials noted that his role at the football association is ad honorem and is not the subject of this specific inquiry.
