AfD pursues governance strategies in Sachsen-Anhalt and Brandenburg

Following the state election in Sachsen-Anhalt, the AfD is pursuing several strategies to consolidate power and prepare for potential governance. In the state parliament, the AfD is seeking to change rules regarding the appointment of vice-presidents, a move that would grant them nomination rights regardless of faction size. Critics, including the Left Party (Die Linke), have accused the BSW of ‘collusion and backroom deals’ with the AfD for supporting these procedural changes.

To prepare for administrative roles, AfD leadership in Sachsen-Anhalt plans to deepen ties with the Austrian FPÖ to gain experience in coalition management. Simultaneously, the party in Brandenburg has launched a ‘Political Academy’ to train members in subjects such as budgeting, ministry management, and dealing with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the future of democratic institutions. Maik Reichel, director of the State Agency for Political Education in Sachsen-Anhalt, noted that the AfD’s platform includes dissolving his agency and replacing it with a ‘state institute for patriotism.’
