BSW seeks AfD cooperation while facing internal unrest

Overview

The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has intensified its push to dismantle the "brandmauer" (political firewall) isolating the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) ahead of state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In Thuringia, leadership clashes erupted between federal chairman Fabio De Masi and parliamentary secretary Stefan Wogawa over alleged misinformation. While Thuringian membership saw a temporary rise to approximately 570 members after clearing an application backlog, the party remains volatile. In Saxony-Anhalt, the BSW faced a wave of defections from several high-ranking regional leaders, including former state vice-chair Sylvia Winkelmann-Witkowsky, who cited an authoritarian leadership style and the party's increasing adoption of AfD-aligned political themes.
