Stephan Bothe barred from Lüneburg landrat poll amid AfD exclusion law
A new municipal‑election law adopted by the red‑green coalition in Lower Saxony allows election committees to assess a candidate’s constitutional loyalty using information from the state Verfassungsschutz. The law was applied to several AfD candidates ahead of the September 13, 2026 local elections.
Stephan Bothe, the AfD’s Lower Saxony deputy state chairman and a Landtag member, was rejected by the Lüneburg district election committee by a 6‑1 vote. He described the decision as a “back‑door ban” and said the party remains fully committed to the Grundgesetz. The AfD in Lower Saxony is classified by the state Verfassungsschutz as a right‑wing extremist suspect, and the same procedure previously excluded AfD Bundestag member Martin Sichert from the Friesland landrat race and Thorsten Moriße from the Wilhelmshaven mayoral contest. Additional candidates such as Justin Vogel were also barred. The interior ministry recommended Bothe’s exclusion, citing eleven statements. The controversy has sparked debate over the balance between safeguarding democratic institutions and preserving electoral rights.
