Thuringia political crisis: BSW demands resignation of Mario Voigt

Thuringia is facing a political crisis following the revocation of Minister-President Mario Voigt’s doctoral title by TU Chemnitz due to plagiarism. The BSW federal leadership has called for Voigt’s immediate resignation and the end of the current 'blackberry coalition' consisting of the CDU, BSW, and SPD. However, the Thuringian BSW state association has expressed opposition to this move, urging calm and seeking to maintain the coalition.

In a move to destabilize the government, AfD leader Björn Höcke has offered support to Sahra Wagenknecht to become Minister-President. An alliance between the AfD and BSW would control 47 of the 88 seats in the Thuringian parliament, providing a majority to potentially oust Voigt through a motion of censure. Wagenknecht has reportedly rejected Höcke’s proposal.

Meanwhile, the BSW is facing internal instability, with 21 members, including several regional leaders, resigning from the Halle/Saalekreis district association. The defectors cited an authoritarian leadership style and concerns regarding the party's rhetorical proximity to the AfD.
