AfD leadership shifts: youth chief seeks federal board seat as party keeps BSW coalitions on the table

AfD youth organization Generation Deutschland (GD) chief Jean‑Pascal Hohm, a 29‑year‑old Brandenburg state MP, announced his candidacy for a seat on the party’s federal board ahead of the July party congress in Erfurt. He told the press, “Die junge Generation ist ein entscheidender Teil der Zukunft unserer Partei …” and argued the youth should have a formal role in steering the party’s future.

At the same time, the AfD’s federal leadership signaled it will not rule out coalition talks with Sahra Wagenknecht’s new BSW party in the eastern states of Saxony‑Anhalt and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern. A spokesperson for party chair Alice Weidel said, “Komplett ausschließen möchten wir keine Option,” while Wagenknecht warned that voting for BSW would “die Brandmauer abwählen.” The party maintains its primary aim of securing an absolute majority in the upcoming state elections, but remains open to post‑election cooperation if BSW gains seats.
