Taliban expands diplomatic and economic ties despite human rights isolation
Five years after returning to power, the Taliban is expanding its diplomatic and economic ties despite continued international isolation. While Russia remains the only nation to officially recognize the Taliban government, other countries are engaging with Kabul for pragmatic reasons involving trade, security, and infrastructure. Central Asian nations, including Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, are exploring trade routes through Afghanistan to reach maritime ports.
In the economic sector, the Taliban is seeking investment in mining and cross-border infrastructure, with China emerging as a significant partner. The European Union is also engaging in discussions with Afghan representatives regarding the repatriation of unsuccessful asylum seekers.
However, international relations remain strained by the Taliban's policies regarding human rights. UNESCO has highlighted that Afghanistan is currently the only country where women and girls are officially banned from attending secondary and higher education. An estimated 2.4 million girls are currently excluded from the school system, reversing decades of educational progress.
